Automatic Folding Hinge
Where the bottom of the rail would otherwise obstruct a doorway or walkway, an automatic folding hinge can move the rail clear as the stair lift travels. Charging areas above and below the hinge provide additional flexibility over where the lift can be parked.

A key lock can be added where you would like to prevent unauthorized use of the stair lift.

The Atlas 500 is particularly compact, measuring approximately 11 inches from the wall when folded. The rail itself sits approximately 6.5 inches from the wall in a typical installation. Exact dimensions and clearances depend on your staircase and installation position, which we check during your free home survey.
Can the Atlas 500 help keep a doorway or walkway clear?
In some installations, yes. The Atlas 500 has extended charging areas that allow the chair to charge in a range of parking positions. This can sometimes allow the lift to be parked one or two steps above the lower landing, helping clear a nearby doorway or walkway without requiring a folding rail.
Why doesn't the Atlas 500 drive need grease?
The Atlas 500 uses a lubricant-free polymer drive system rather than a conventional greased gear rack. The reinforced polymer rack works with a low-friction worm-drive system to provide smooth, efficient operation without exposed rail grease. This helps keep the rail cleaner and prevents grease from collecting dust and pet hair or accidentally transferring onto clothing.
What happens if the power goes out?
The Atlas 500 is battery operated, so it can continue to operate during a power outage while sufficient battery charge remains. Atlas specifies up to 60 cycles during a power outage. Actual performance can vary depending on factors such as battery condition, user weight and staircase length.
Can the Atlas 500 have a folding rail?
Yes. An automatic folding rail is available where the bottom of the track would otherwise obstruct a doorway or walkway. The rail moves automatically as the stair lift travels, and charging areas above and below the hinge provide additional flexibility when parking the lift.
