There isn’t one minimum staircase width that applies to every person and every stair lift. The width required depends on the stair lift, the user’s size and seated position, knee clearance and how the staircase will be used by other members of the household.

No. Straight stair lifts are normally attached to the staircase using brackets secured to the stair treads, not to the wall.

This means there’s normally no need for structural work to the wall.

Most straight stair lift installations can be completed in just a few hours. More complicated installations, such as those requiring a folding rail or other modifications, may take a little longer.

Often, yes.

Whether the handrail can remain depends on the staircase width, which side the stair lift is installed on and the amount of clearance required for the user. Where possible, we’ll consider keeping an existing handrail available for people who continue to use the stairs on foot.

Modern stair lifts operate from rechargeable batteries, so the lift can normally continue to operate during a temporary power outage.

The number of trips available varies by stair lift model, battery condition, staircase length and user weight. When household power returns, the batteries recharge automatically when the lift is parked in an appropriate charging position.

Yes. Several of the straight stair lifts we install can be fitted with a folding rail where the bottom of the track would otherwise obstruct a doorway or walkway.

Depending on the model and staircase, there may also be other ways of keeping the lower landing clear, which we’ll assess during the survey.

A doorway doesn’t necessarily prevent a straight stair lift from being installed.

Depending on its position, we may be able to use a folding rail, adjust where the lift parks or recommend another configuration that maintains access to the doorway.

Normally, no. A standard straight stair lift follows the angle of the staircase and stops near the top step. The seat then swivels toward the upper landing so the user can get on or off, while the footplate generally remains over the staircase.

If the user’s needs require the lift to travel farther onto the upper landing, we can assess whether a different configuration or curved stair lift would provide a better solution.

You may need a curved stair lift, but not always.

Some staircases can accommodate two straight stair lifts with a transfer at the intermediate landing. Whether this is appropriate depends on the available space and, importantly, whether the user can safely transfer between the two lifts.
